BMW 1 Series has carried most of its fundamental technological features onto the 2012 models. Few changes have been made but the series still possesses the popularity of being one of the best luxury sports cars series to date. The BMW 1 Series comprises of three cars at present.
These include the 2012 128i, the 2012 135i, and the 1-Series M Coupe. The 1 Series M Coupe essentially belongs to the set of cars that came out in 2011 but is still up for sale. A 3 liter normally aspirated inline six-cylinder that has a horsepower of 230 powers the 128i. The three models have a rear wheel drive and are coupled with the choice of six speed manual of six-speed Steptronic automatic transmission and the option of a seven speed; dual clutch transmission is always available in the 135i.
A turbocharged 3 liter inline sic cylinder with a horsepower of 300 and a torque of 300 pound feet powers the 135i. 135i has sharp acceleration and possesses the ability to reach a speed of 60 mph in a matter of five seconds. The M Sport package is also available to further enhance the performance and comes with larger wheels, an improved suspension calibration, better aerodynamics and larger tires. Aesthetic and comfort improvements are also part of the entire package. The 1 Series is highly impressive on the road with its balanced handling and a noticeable amount of an overall high grip, ready acceleration and body roll. The 135i enhances all of these features, specially the acceleration. One of the best features of the series is perhaps its braking which is straight and stable, with a track duty that causes ‘heat soak and fade’. The brakes have not been upgraded but they do possess the standard qualities of the average road car.
All the cars in the 1-Series have an interior that if best described as easy to use, attractive and comfortable at the same time. While the cars are ‘four-seaters’ the back seats are considerably small and is perhaps only suitable for children. There is, however, a lot of space for adults at the front, promising great comfort. The rear seats have a split-folding pass-through feature that provides cargo space for items that are larger of long. The trunk is quite spacious in itself regardless of whether the model is convertible or not. The material and quality of the overall build is quite good. However, the use of relatively low grade plastic and leather has been reported in several areas of the car. Road noise has been well taken care of for the cabin to have low noise and the wind is also well-controlled.
The BMW 1 Series has not been crash-tested by the NHTSA or the IIHS but it does have all the regular safety features that an average car should possess. Despite the fact that the 1 Series is not the most resourceful cars of their kind, the models do not give up much gas mileage, particular on the highway.
